The suras are not in chronological order, but each is considered a recitation of the literal word of God, as given to Muhammad and arranged in the order dictated by him. In all, throughout his lifetime, Muhammad received revelations that make up 114 suras, but in the months following his first revelation, he had no idea of what the future would bring. The tenets of Muhammad’s faith grew slowly. Muhammad’s religion of Islam, which means “submission,” developed as he received further revelations from Allah.

The fourth pillar of faith is fasting. Every year, during the month of Ramadan—when Muhammad received the first revelation—Muslims fast from dawn until sunset to help themselves develop a better relationship with God and remind themselves of the sufferings of the poor. The fifth pillar is the duty to make a once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage to Mecca—the hajj. The pilgrimage represents the unity of all Muslims and of the worldwide community and its oneness under God. It is also a remembrance of Muhammad’s own last pilgrimage to Mecca.
