This may manifest as jokes addressing social inequalities, national contradictions, and negative representations or in calling attention to hateful language, power relations, and cultural grievances.

While many minority comics perform charged humor, they do not have to and we should not assume that they do or will; they are under no obligation to use humor to engender community or speak out against bigotry. In fact, minority comics seeking a professional career in comedy face extraordinary commercial and social pressures to perform in ways that corroborate stereotypes and satisfy audience expectations about “otherness,” for example, a gay man who ratchets up the gay to gain audience approval (think: Jack from Will and Making Connections 35 Grace) or a Black comic who acts gangsta’ although she has never set foot in a ghetto.

There are men who believe this. There are men who believe that a woman because of her biology has her judgment impaired once a month. Well I am a man who happens to have a penis and testicles. My judgment is impaired every five to seven minutes [laughter].  I wake up some mornings with my judgment impaired [laughter]. 20 Kondabolu challenges biological arguments about females’ capacity to lead the country, but it would be difficult to assess whether audience members may change their minds about whether or not a woman would be as good a president as a man.
