If a critical micellar concentration is exceeded, micelles are formed by aggregation of charged surfactants in a liquid solution. In case of an anionic surfactant, these micelles are small circular drops with a negatively charged surface and a hydrophobic inner volume. MECC is usually performed in uncoated fused silica capillaries. Because of the EOF, even negatively charged micelles move toward the anode, albeit at low flow rates. The sample molecules partition in and out of the micelles and the average dwelling time of each analyte species within the micelles will be related to their hydrophobicity.
