7 At the suggestion of John Grant, Universal chose to blend the comedy of Abbott and Costello with elements of their successful horror genre in “Oh, Charlie,” which was in production when Buck Privates was released. But the solid box-office returns from the service picture induced the front office to put the haunted house spoof on the back burner, in favor of a follow-up military comedy, a possibility foreseen by Alex Gottlieb, who had been writing an outline while Buck Privates was in post-production.

As always, Breen objected to anything that might be “suggestive” (Moonbeam approaching Willoughby while in his “nightgown”), and Ella Fitzgerald appearing as Ruby dressed like an “Indian” was deemed highly objectionable. Meanwhile, Anne teaches Broncho Bob how to ride and rope. By the time the “Frontier Day Celebration” rolls around, he’s a regular rootin’, tootin’ cowboy, but the villainous Ace Anderson (Morris Ankrum) places a large bet against the success of the Lazy-S buckaroos, then kidnaps Alabam (Johnny Mack Brown) as gambling insurance.
